Abstract

Abstract: A comparative study of the oral literature and written literature in expressing opposition to the ruling class The written tradition was found solely among the limited number of the high class people until the late 19th century. When education was limited due to caste, class, political dominance and economic situation the literary expressions of ordinary laymen, farmers, and women were demonstrated through oral medium. Oral usages include verbal performances, customary beliefs, habits, and rituals. Oral literature consists of oral songs, tales, poems, narrative poems, proverbs, and riddles. Ancient medieval literature mostly belong to literate people. They were often created to reveal the opinions of those who in power due to caste and gender. As a result, the plight and tragedies of the grassroots people were not included in the themes of written literature until the late 19th century except for pallu and kuravanchi. The problems and difficulties of the ordinary people and their characterizations were highlighted in oral literature. It is essential to discern how social criticism was delineated in oral literature as they claim to present a faithful portrayal of realistic life styles, social corruption than the written literature.
