The Lakśaṇa and the Lakśya are equally important for Music. The lakśaṇa, i.e., the grammar of the details of a particular aspect in music, acts as an authentication and is followed by the musicians/artists. These aspects, or lakśaṇās, have been passed on to us by our music ancestors in the form of ‘Lakśaṇa granthās.’ These serve as the authenticated documents that provide details/information about the development and the progression of our Indian Music, through the ages, right from the ancient, medieval, and modern periods.
