From the Sangam period to the contemporary era, earning a livelihood has been a central theme in all literary works. The circumstances for earning a living vary for each individual. It has been a common practice for people born into a particular social group to be compelled to perform only the occupation associated with that group, and for those in higher social strata to exploit the labor of marginalized people, treating them as slaves and humiliating them. The life of marginalized people is such that as soon as a child learns to walk and talk, they are immediately put to work. This article examines the lifestyle of such marginalized people, the occupations they pursue to meet their daily needs, and the challenges they face in these occupations, through the short stories of Su. Venugopal.
