Abstract

Sangam-era literature's Akathinai (inner-life) poems beautifully express the inner feelings of human life in a literary form. In particular, the Akathinai tradition, centered on love, is a natural expression of the Shringara Rasa mentioned in Indian aesthetic theory. While the Sanskrit Rasa theories remain as theoretical explanations, in Tamil Sangam literature they are expressed naturally and experientially. This study examines how Shringara Rasa is created in Sangam-era Akathinai literature, how the thinai(landscape/genre) tradition guides it, and how the experience of love evolves into a Rasa experience for the reader.
