Information regarding the "Uninhabited Village" (abandoned or ghost villages) of TamilNadu exists only as archaic data. In reality, new speechless villages are emerging in TamilNadu at regular intervals. There has been no systematic documentation concerning the history of these villages or the underlying factors leading to their formation. The usage of this technical term is a historical continuation of the concepts mentioned in Sangam literature, such as 'a village deserted by its inhabitants' (kudi-neengiya oor), 'a desolate village' (paazhoor), 'a front yard where squirrels play because people have left' (makkal pogiya anilaadu mundril), 'a vast ruined assembly ground where wealthy families have departed' (kozhuangudi pogiya perumpaazh mandram), and 'a village where dwellers have moved away' (alkunar pogiya oor). The primary objective of this research paper is to put forward a critical discourse regarding this phenomenon.
Keywords: Uninhabited Village, abandoned, inhabitants, desolate village.
