Abstract

Among the Tamil grammatical books, the Tolkappiyam is considered to be the most ancient and distinguished by antiquity and greatness. The author of this book is Tolkappiyar. Tolkappiyar has recorded his views on Punarchi (euphonic combination) in the Ezhuthathikaram. In Tamil grammatical texts, the role of the grammar of Punarchi is indispensable. Tolkappiyam – Ezhuththadhikaram, Nannul, Veerasozhiyam, Neminatham, Muthuveeriyam, Ilakkana Vilakkam, Swaminatham, and Thonnul Vilakkam these eight books explain the grammar of Punarchi . Based on how letters are arranged in a language, grammar is explained in the language system. Tholkappiyar did not explain the method by which letters combine to form language (words). Therefore, this research summary examines what kind of relationship Tholkappiyar considered to exist between letters and words.
