Tradition (Marabu) is intrinsically linked to every facet of culture. It may be defined as a practice followed by many, or as a norm accepted by the collective. Tolkappiyar himself describes it as "the science of tradition (Marabiyal)—a realm of excellence that is immutable" (Tol. Mar. Sutra 1). Throughout his treatise, his reverence for ancestral traditions is evident in his frequent use of phrases such as enba (they say), mozhiba(they state), kooruba (they articulate), and enmanar (scholars opine). In his work, Tolkappiyar has meticulously documented numerous traditions—pertaining to Ezhuthu(orthography), Sol (morphology/syntax), and Porul (semantics/subject matter)—that prevailed both during his own era and in the periods preceding it. These traditional conventions feature prominently in the Sangam literature that emerged subsequent to Tolkappiyar’s era—most notably within the Kalithogai. As the Kalithogai stands as a literary work of a later period, one observes within it certain deviations in traditional usage regarding the nomenclature employed to designate animals, birds, and human beings. Furthermore, this literary work also contains traditional conventions that were not explicitly cited by Tolkappiyar. The objective of this paper is to analyse these specific aspects.
