Travel has been a fundamental factor in the advancement of human civilization. In the lives of the Sangam Tamils, travel played a significant role in both the internal (Akam) and external (Puram) spheres of life.In their external life, notable journeys included those undertaken by spies for intelligence gathering, poets who traveled to mediate and prevent wars, and merchants who embarked on expeditions to expand trade and economic prosperity. In their internal life, travel was beautifully depicted through 'elopement' (Udanpokku), where lovers transitioned from a secretive relationship to a socially recognized marital life. Additionally, journeys undertaken to resolve lovers' tiffs (Oodal) and reunite the hero and heroine also held a prominent place.
