Abstract

Tolkāppiyam, written by Tholkāppiyar, is a grammatical treatise in Tamil. It is regarded as the finest grammatical work composed in the Tamil language. Although it is primarily a grammar text, it is structured with the elegance and beauty of a literary work. The clarity of its organization and the techniques embedded within it contribute to its aesthetic appeal. Many literary devices are skillfully employed in this work. Among them, imagery is particularly noteworthy. Tolkāppiyar has presented several words through imagery. He has used imagery in describing the names of the thinai (landscape-based poetic categories) and also in explaining certain other words.
