In this context, Tolkappiyam the earliest extant Tamil text not only elucidates the grammatical structure of the language (covering letters and words) but also stands as a comprehensive repository of life, articulating the framework of human existence itself. Sangam literary works are structured based on the Porulathikaram (the section on subject matter) of Tholkappiyam. Beyond their classification into Aham (inner/subjective) and Puram (outer/objective) categories, these texts vividly portray concepts related to human existence and the lifestyles of the people of the Sangam era.
