Abstract

In the structural framework of Tamil grammar, ‘non-finite verbs (‘Echavinaigal’)’ serve as the most primary factor for expanding and linking sentences, with the “adverbial participle (‘Vinaiyechcham’)” being the most prominent among them. This article comprehensively analyzes the theories of ‘Vinaiyechcham’ as formulated in the Tamil grammatical tradition by ‘Tholkappiyam’ and ‘Nannool’, comparing them with modern ‘descriptive’ and ‘transformational-generative linguistic theories’. The study analyzes the nine types of individual ‘Vinaiyechcham’ formulas (‘Vaipaadugal’) and compound adverbial participles specified by ‘Tholkappiyar’, alongside the chronological classification and twelve ‘Vinaiyechcham’ forms stated by ‘Nannoolar’...
