Abstract

Literature often reflects human life and culture by portraying the customs, beliefs, and practices of a community. Through such representations, authors communicate their perspectives on society and human experience. In this context, the novel Thoorvai is set in Urulaikudi, a village in the black-soil (Karisal)region of southern Tamil Nadu, and vividly depicts the agricultural lifestyle of its inhabitants. Since agriculture in this region depends heavily on rainfall, the community faces significant challenges during periods of drought or delayed monsoon. In response to such crises, the villagers perform a variety of traditional rain-invoking rituals rooted in their cultural and religious beliefs.
