Amitav Ghosh’s fiction interrogates how storytelling works in tandem with historical documentation. He discovers lost histories, using oral narrative, folklore, and myth as a form of evidence. But mainstream historians nowadays are known to write only about clearly documented events which show national development. This has been stressed as an erasure of subaltern people, namely refugees, enslaved people, and marginalized peoples’ narratives that the official state archive violently disowns..
