Abstract

Abstract: Religious feeling and belief in God pervaded the ancient Tamil life. Two thousand years old Tamil literature shows that faith in God did not depend on a particular religion during the Sangam period. The term religion and its emotion were found in later texts. Although the people of the Sangam period believed in God and worshiped gods like Shiva and Thirumal, but saivam, Vaishnavism and Jainism were not rooted. Religion or religious beliefs were brought by the Jains and Buddhists from the north. Before that there was no particular religion or denomination in Tamil Nadu.
