In the Sri Lankan Tamil context, many folk tale studies are incomplete due to several reasons. Often, the research area is not clearly defined. In addition, different versions of the same folk tale are not given proper attention. Most studies describe the content only based on personal interest or enjoyment, rather than using a scientific method. Because of these reasons, such studies do not reach clear or reliable conclusions. Therefore, from the initial stage of collecting folk tales, it is necessary to use folkloristic theories to classify and study them systematically. In particular, structural theory provides a clear framework for scientifically classifying collected folk tales. When a folk tale exists in more than one version, structural analysis helps to compare these versions in a meaningful way. Through this method, the internal structure and content of the tale can be clearly explained.
