In Vaishnava literature, pulampal refers to the devotee’s sorrowful longing for Lord Vishnu, expressing deep love, separation, and the desire for union. Found prominently in the hymns of the Alvars like Nammalvar, Andal, and Periyalvar, it appears in various emotional forms such as separation (viraham), nayaki bhava, and surrender (saranagati). Rich in poetic imagery, pulampal is not just an expression of grief but a profound spiritual experience that highlights the soul’s journey toward the Divine. This study examines the presence and significance of pulampal in Alvar hymns.
