Abstract

This study examines the beliefs reflected in Sangam literature and their significance in the life of the ancient Tamils. It analyzes references found in Kuruntokai, Natrinai, Ainkurunuru, Akananuru, and Mullaippattu, including omens, crow beliefs, chameleon omens, viricci (auspicious utterances), moon worship, rebirth, curses, bodily signs, nature worship, and the symbolic importance of the number seven. The study highlights how these beliefs shaped the social, cultural, and religious life of the Sangam people and demonstrates that many of these traditional beliefs continue to influence contemporary Tamil society...
