Abstract

This paper examines the significance of agriculture and the scientific farming practices of ancient Tamils based on evidence from Tamil classical literature. Thiruvalluvar regarded agriculture as the noblest of all occupations, and Sangam literature extensively highlights the dignity of farmers and their agricultural knowledge. The study discusses traditional practices such as deep ploughing, repeated tillage, no-till sowing, land leveling, the use of organic manure, water management, seed preservation, weed control, high-yield cultivation, and integrated rice–fish farming, supported by literary references. These practices demonstrate an environmentally sustainable and scientifically informed agricultural tradition that promoted efficient resource utilization and ecological balance. The paper concludes that the agricultural wisdom preserved in ancient Tamil literature remains highly relevant in addressing contemporary challenges such as climate change, sustainable farming, and food security, emphasizing the need to preserve and promote these indigenous agricultural practices...
