Abstract

Lexicons (Nighandus) play a vital role in preserving and enriching the vocabulary of the Tamil language. They are repositories of words that provide multiple meanings for a single term and list various words that share the same meaning. These lexicons help in understanding the meaning, usage, and associated terms of a word. They have served as significant cultural elements that foster health, morality, unity, and a spirit of valor in human life. Consequently, numerous terms related to various Tamil games-including their equipment, rules, and procedures-are found in Nikandus (traditional Tamil lexicons).
