Abstract

In the Tamil literary tradition, colours are employed not merely as visual descriptions but as profound cultural symbols. Among them, "Blackness" (Karumai) has manifested in various thematic contexts from the era of Tolkappiyam to the present day. Initially representing the density of nature, it later evolved into a symbol of ignorance, and eventually, in ethical literature (Ara Ilakkiyam), it transitioned into a metaphor for deceit. This article analyzes the diverse metaphorical representations of the colour black within Tolkappiyam and subsequent literary works. Specifically, this study explicates how human psychological states are identified and characterized through the use of colour in literature.
